Clinical Haematologist - Stem Cell Transplant | Christchurch, New Zealand


About the Role

Our client is seeking a Clinical Haematologist to join the Stem Cell Transplant Team located in Christchurch.  This is an opportunity to work within a nationally recognised tertiary haematology and stem cell transplant service, delivering complex, life-saving care to patients across the South Island.

This role will suit a specialist who enjoys working in a collaborative multidisciplinary environment, with a strong focus on clinical excellence, patient-centred care, service development, research, and continuous improvement.

The Clinical Haematologist — Stem Cell Transplant is responsible for providing high-level clinical care to patients undergoing autologous and allogeneic stem cell transplantation.  The role includes patient assessment, transplant planning and coordination, pre- and post-transplant follow-up, inpatient and outpatient haematology care, and contribution to the ongoing development of the service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide specialist clinical haematology care across stem cell transplant, inpatient, and outpatient settings.
  • Support patients undergoing autologous and allogeneic stem cell transplantation.
  • Undertake patient assessment, treatment planning, transplant coordination, and follow-up care.
  • Manage a broad range of haematological conditions, including acute leukaemia’s, lymphoma, myeloma, and general haematology presentations.
  • Work collaboratively with haematologists, transplant coordinators, specialist nurses, allied health professionals, and support teams.
  • Contribute to multidisciplinary care planning, patient-centred treatment pathways, and safe clinical decision-making.
  • Participate in service development, quality improvement, teaching, and research opportunities.
  • Support a culture of clinical excellence, compassion, teamwork, and continuous improvement.

Requirements

  • Eligible for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand in Internal Medicine — Haematology.
  • Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, or equivalent specialist qualification.
  • Experience in autologous and/or allogeneic stem cell transplantation.
  • Strong clinical judgement, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to multidisciplinary teamwork, quality improvement, and patient-centred care.
  • Ability to work effectively within a busy tertiary hospital environment.
  • A compassionate and collaborative approach to supporting patients through complex treatment pathways.
