Job Summary:
To perform, under the responsibility and supervision of the intensivist/pulmonologist, diagnostic and therapeutic tasks to allow the physician to extend his services through the more effective use of his knowledge in the sphere of decision-making required to establish diagnosis and to plan therapy. He/she may assist in gathering the data necessary in implementing the therapeutic plan of the intensivist. A major role will be as a patient's advocate in the medical care system serving as confidant, advisor and liaison between patients and physicians.
Job Responsibilities
• A. Monitors patients and administers treatment as indicated.
◦ 1. Performs and records History and Physical Examination.
◦ 2. Writes routine admission orders and arranges appropriate laboratory and x-ray studies and consultations as per protocol or after consultation with the supervisory/attending physician.
◦ 3. Obtains patient's signature on consent form for procedures to be performed by the intensivist or APP.
• B. Performs therapeutic procedures and assignments as directed by the physician and as indicated by his/her training and experience.
◦ 1. Wound care/debridement and dressings.
◦ 2. Venipuncture and percutaneous arterial catheterization.
◦ 3. Arterial punctures for arterial blood gas analysis.
◦ 4. Insertion, use, and removal of intravenous lines, central venous pressure lines and pulmonary artery catheters.
◦ 5. Nasogastric intubation.
◦ 6. Bladder catheterization -- insertion and irrigation of Foley catheters.
◦ 7. Insertion, removal, and suctioning of chest tubes.
◦ 8. Management of volume-controlled ventilators.
◦ 9. Management of medications
◦ 10. Phone call management of floor patients as an augmentation to the hospitalist service
◦ 11. Evaluate and treat medical conditions as indicated and appropriate
◦ 12. Cardiac resuscitation, defibrillation/cardioversion, and overdrive cardioversion.
◦ 13. Record 12-lead ECG and inspect for arrhythmias.
◦ 14. Adjustment and removal of surgical drains.
◦ 15. Suture/staple removal.
◦ 16. Endotracheal intubation/extubation.
◦ 17. Operate Doppler measure equipmen
• C. Participates in postoperative care of patients, being especially knowledgeable in the recognition of postoperative complications.
◦ 1. Informs the physician of all changes in the patient's condition.
◦ 2. Assesses the patient's course, and transcribes/implements indicated therapy as determined by the intensivist.
◦ 3. Communicates patient progress to appropriate consultants.
◦ 4. Collects data and writes pertinent progress notes on charts.
◦ 5. Communicates with nursing staff to gather information and discuss patient care.
◦ 6. Summarizes details of patient's hospitalization in discharge summary, including operative procedures and follow-up of complications.
◦ 7. Makes routine rounds as directed by the intensivist.
◦ 8. Be especially familiar with sepsis recognition and treatment
◦ 9. Communicates appropriate information to family members.
◦ 10. Writes transfer orders when indicated.
◦ 11. Communicates with attending service regarding patient's ICU/hospital course and care.
• D. Recognizes acute medical diagnoses and treats according to current standards of care.
• E. Orders and interprets various diagnostic tests and formulates a treatment plan with the physician.
• F. Answer floor questions via hospital provided telephone specific to specific floor patients
• Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures
• Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization

Advanced Cardiac Life Support
Prescriptive Authority
Required Education
Bachelor's Degree if PA, degree in a physical science from an accredited institution and working knowledge of vascular surgical procedures and anatomy.
Master's Degree if NP, MSN from an accredited institution and working knowledge of vascular surgical procedures and anatomy.
Two years recent experience in vascular surgery preferred. Recent Board eligible graduate acceptable preferred.
